Sustainability

Macerich®, one of the nation’s leading shopping center owners, developers and operators, is sharply focused on sustainability as a long-term, fully integrated business approach. Throughout its operations, the company is actively integrating sustainable practices designed to ensure a healthy environment for employees, retailers, shoppers and communities. These efforts are designed to help conserve resources while simultaneously supporting the company’s business goals.

For Macerich, the positive economic returns stemming from sustainable practices are equally as important as the social, cultural and environmental benefits. These endeavors complement the company’s longstanding philosophy of engaging and giving back to its local communities.

The company initially implemented a strategic energy plan, which focuses less on certifications and more on making changes across the board to help save energy and the environment, while delivering lower costs. Since then, a comprehensive, five-year sustainability plan was launched. Sustainability is integrated across the portfolio and tailored to each property. Elevating sustainability within the company’s corporate culture is a cornerstone of Macerich’s commitment.

What We’re Doing at The Shops at Montebello

  • Our Security Staff uses Global Electric Motorcars and Segways instead of vehicles powered by gas.

  • We use green cleaning products at our center wherever and whenever possible.

  • The center has implemented new lighting protocols that allow us to minimize our energy use and lower our carbon footprint without any impact on the shopping experience.

  • Our center has a recently upgraded HVAC system that minimizes our energy usage and lowers our carbon footprint.

  • Fast drying Dyson Airblade hand dryers were installed in the public restrooms in 2008.  They save approximately 15 trees and use 80% less energy per year, per dryer.

  • Waterless urinals were installed in the men’s facilities in 2008.  On average, 40,000 gallons of fresh water, per urinal, per year is conserved.

  • Electronic Waste recycling events are an annual event at the shopping center. This year in February, 48,000 pounds of Ewaste was collected at the center and diverted from landfills.

  • All of the holiday décor has been converted to an LED lighting concept.

  • In 2009, The Shops at Montebello will be undergoing a skylight enhancement project by replacing the existing skylights with energy efficient materials. The project is expected to enhance the natural lighting and save in energy costs for lighting, heating and cooling the center.

  • In 2008, a new Energy Management System was installed to computerize the schedule for all lights and energy used at the center. The new system allows the center to more efficiently run the lighting and cooling systems throughout.

  • Light timers and sensors were installed in less trafficked electrical rooms and mall management offices.

  • Lighting retro-fit took place in the interior service corridors in our first quarter of 2009. With these service corridor lights being on around the clock, the retro fit will save 135,545 kwh of power.
